Most enterprise AI programs measure the wrong things. They track deployment velocity (number of AI systems in production), user adoption (percentage of target users who have logged in), and technical performance (model accuracy, latency). The most effective AI measurement programs connect all three levels in a causal chain: activity drives process change, process change drives business outcome. When the chain breaks (high activity, unchanged process, or improved process without business outcome), it identifies the specific intervention required.
Common Investment Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
The vendor-led roadmap mistake: Enterprises that allow AI vendors to define their AI investment roadmap end up with a portfolio optimized for the vendor's revenue rather than the enterprise's strategic priorities. Vendor input is valuable for understanding what is technically possible, but investment prioritization must be driven by the enterprise's own strategic analysis.
